Jiggery Pokery - 28 October 2009

Charles Hawtrey

Amanda Lawrence creates a striking homage to Charles Hawtrey, bringing his distinctive spirit to the stage in this funny and poignant tribute to the troubled Carry On star. Drawing on the accounts of the people that knew him, this one woman show interweaves extracts from the Carry On films with episodes from his life: from his days as a child star in Peter Pan and filming at the Pinewood Studios to his final days as a lonely and unpopular drunk on the Kent Coast.

1984 - 15 October 2009

An image of two people about to kiss

60 years after 1984’s publication, leading puppetry innovators Blind Summit Theatre and BAC bring George Orwell’s visionary dystopian novel to the stage in a minimalist low tech new adaptation. Drawing on agit-prop techniques, the company returns to a simple form of theatre making free from modern digital technology, using just cardboard props, live actors and puppetry. The ensemble manipulates objects, people, puppets and the set to tell the story of Winston and Julia’s dissident love affair in a futuristic totalitarian state.
