We are working with Jess Thom of Touretteshero to open up Battersea Arts Centre to more people, tackling existing physical, cultural and social barriers.
Together, we are developing and piloting a brand new methodology for Relaxed Venues as part of Arts Council England’s Change Makers programme. A Relaxed Venue is an idea that builds on the principles of Relaxed Performances, which are designed to extend a warm welcome to people who might find it hard to follow the conventions of theatre etiquette.
The project will promote disability culture, remove barriers to access and increase opportunities for disabled people as leaders, makers and participants.
Battersea Arts Centre is committed to becoming the first ever Relaxed Venue across all our teams, eventually producing a Relaxed Venue model which can be adopted by other cultural venues in the UK and internationally. In March 2019, we are celebrating this commitment with The Festival of Rest & Resistance - which will showcase the best of the UK's disability arts scene.
